BECOMING SIMPLE

Living a simple and a minimalist lifestyle.

The value I put on worth

I was trying to sell all the above stuff on the Facebook Marketplace, Gumtree (Australia) and eBay at a price where I did not incur any losses. I had calculated the amount I had spent on all of it and it added up to $707. This excludes the items which where just lying around for years that I had not bought but had included as a bonus just to increase the price.

I tried selling them for 3 months but no one would buy them. Every day I would check how many views the listing has gotten and every couple of days I would lower the price by a small margin. I even got offers of $350 to $450 but I would decline them as I did not want to go any lower than what I wanted. It is a simple case of giving more worth to an item just because I already own it.

10 Days ago I decided to do an experiment, maybe because I gave up or because I just did not care anymore. I went on eBay and listed it all together in an auction starting from a $1 reserve. I wanted to see how much someone would pay for it. Again everyday I would check the listing to see if it has gotten new bids and I kept wishing that I at least got $350 out of it which was the lowest I had been offered previously. Obviously someone would pay at least that much.

Today that auction ended and the winning bid was exactly $100. Much lower than what I had expected. I am shocked to see how much value I attach to things even though they are not worth that much. I am happy it is sold as it has helped me learn a lesson and also helped declutter my room. The one thing I have gotten out of this is to not put worth on things that I own. They are only there to be used and once it is bought, the price falls sharply. In the end my hard earned money is just being wasted when it can be used towards my loans or rent. So in the future I will be more mindful of what I am buying and only buy things that I will keep for many years.

Ideal All in One Device (The most minimalist tech)

For the next upgrade I have in the future, I want it to be an ideal all in one device which needs to replace my 2018 MacBook Pro 15” and my iPhone 11 with all their accessories.

It will be the only personal electronic device I own. I plan to upgrade in 2025 (After 5 years), so there is enough time buffer for such a device to become available.

Criteria and specifications needed:

  • Single screen foldable (Like the Huawei Mate X)
  • Folded it is a Smartphone
  • Opened up it is a Tablet (With a big enough screen size to replace my laptop)
  • Has 2+ cameras or 5x Zoom and macro mode.
  • Small bezels and no notch (Like the 2018 iPad Pro 11”)
  • Has a desktop class operating system (Including torrenting capability)
  • Is waterproof and dustproof
  • Has excellent battery life
  • Has a MicroLED display
  • Uses USB-C connection
  • Has fast charging
  • Is made of recycled material
  • Has wireless charging
  • Has a 3.5mm headphone jack (My expectations are too high)
  • Must have at-least 512GB storage
  • OS is secure and privacy focused (Like Linux)
  • NFC for public transport and payment
  • 5G (Hopefully the data plans are so cheap in 5 years that we don’t need wifi at home anymore)

I hope the device price is cheap enough that it can be bought with the money made by selling my MacBook Pro and iPhone. So there is no extra cost of purchase. The MacBook Pro and iPhone cost me AU$4,000 combined.

This device basically combines all the electronics I would need at a given time. This includes:

  • DSLR Camera
  • Audiophile Music Player
  • Tablet computer / Laptop
  • Mobile phone
  • GPS
  • Dedicated file storage device
  • My wallet

I understand that the all in one device may not provide the same capabilities as these dedicated devices but it will be more useful as it will be with me all the time.

My daily usage habits are as below:

  • Watch Netflix
  • Watch Youtube
  • Go on Facebook / Marketplace
  • Go on Gumtree
  • Check eBay and other sites
  • Use WhatsApp
  • Check emails
  • Download torrents
  • Watch Anime and movies
  • Take photos
  • Listen to music
  • Make notes
  • Read books / articles
  • Use dedicated apps (E.G. Banking app and Messenger apps)
  • Paying bills (Monthly)

According to what I use my devices for. My system requirements are not very resource intensive. My current MacBook Pro has a 6-Core i7 processor and 16GB RAM which is overkill for what I use it for. It is more than likely that when this all in one device is released in 5 years, its hardware will be more powerful than both my current devices because of the rate of progress in the technology sector.

In majority of the developing countries, most people already use a smartphone as their only device as most tasks can be done on it without needing a dedicated computer which can be hard to afford. I can go on this same route but this would put restrictions on myself and I need my laptop for work and studying. If you can live with only one personal device then do it as it is cheaper and involves less time spent on looking at two screens. Also you don’t have to worry about taking care of two devices while travelling and this decreases mental stress / anxiety.
