Simple Mac/PC

Being a minimalist I don’t like things being bloated around me and that includes my laptop which I use everyday for studying, work and for fun. My laptop is an important source of productivity and I like it to be clean, simple to use and minimalist.

MY DESKTOP

This is how my current desktop looks. I have made the Dock hidden so that it isn’t a distraction when I am not using it, and I have also disabled the Finder from showing any Hard disks, External disks or any CDs, DVDs and iPods which are connected to my mac on the desktop.

I also don’t keep any files or folders on the desktop as it wont make it look cluttered, this way whenever I open up my mac, it feels refreshing and relaxing when you use it every time. You can also make everything hidden on your Windows PC desktop so the only thing you can see when you open up your computer is your beautiful desktop wallpaper.

MY APPLICATIONS

Most of the applications I use already come builtin with OS X Mountain Lion.

I use the Notes app for taking notes (Duh!),

I use iTunes to organize my music,

I use the Mail app for checking my emails,

I use Safari for web browsing,

I use the Messages app for chatting with my friends (including Facebook friends),

I use the TextEdit app for writing documents, it is simple to use and super fast!,

I also use other third party apps like Dropbox to manage my documents and files on the cloud and Skype to video call friends and family.

Previously I used to use Growl for notifications but do not need it anymore as OS X Mountain Lion has a beautiful notifications system built right into it. You can do the same for windows and just use the builtin applications that come with the OS as they are not as bad as some people say it to be. Different people have different needs and recommendations as everyone uses their computer differently and for different purposes.

It is a good idea to not keep apps on your computer which you don’t use very often as they just use up your Hard disk space and sometimes keep eating your RAM memory in the background when you don’t even know it.

A good place for tips and tricks for your Mac is Minimal Mac, they have great articles on keeping your mac clean and running fast!

At the end of the day if you want to keep your computer simple to use then keep it minimalist as it will decrease distractions and increase your productivity.
